TikTok Shop vs Amazon FBA: Where Should You Sell First?

Sellers often assume they have to pick one platform and commit. In reality, Amazon and TikTok Shop serve different buying moments, and knowing which one fits your product right now can save months of wasted ad spend.
Amazon Rewards Search Intent
Amazon customers are already looking for a solution. If your product solves a well-defined problem with an existing search volume, ranks well against clear keywords, and can compete on reviews and price, Amazon is usually the faster path to consistent revenue. It requires more upfront capital for inventory (FBA) and PPC, but the demand is already there.
TikTok Shop Rewards Discovery
TikTok Shop customers aren't searching, they're scrolling. Products that are visual, demonstrate an obvious "aha" moment in under 3 seconds, or solve a problem people didn't know they had tend to outperform there. The upfront cost is lower (no FBA inventory requirement to start, since TikTok Shop supports seller-fulfilled options), but success depends heavily on creative and creator relationships rather than keyword bidding.
The Practical Answer
If your product has strong existing search demand on Amazon and a defensible price point, start there to build reviews and cash flow. If your product is highly visual, novel, or benefits from a demo, TikTok Shop can generate faster initial traction with a smaller budget. Most brands that scale past $500K/year end up running both, using TikTok UGC as top-of-funnel content that also improves Amazon conversion rates when repurposed into listing videos and ads.
